251 Vermont Vistas
Written and Illustrated by Nancy Stone

251 Vermont Vistas began with a simple statement:  Ken Stone announced to his wife Nancy that he wanted “to drive on all the back roads of Vermont and you can do art”.  That brought to mind the 251 Club of Vermont, so they became members.

Since the club has no rules, members decide their own mission, i.e. photographing, biking, geocaching, etc. in each town.  Ken and Nancy decided that he would drive and she would document each place with a journal entry and watercolor painting.  They decided to start from scratch, visiting each of the 251 towns, even though they’d lived in Williston for nearly 50 years.  Ken was born and raised a Vermonter and had been employed by the State; Nancy visited grandparents in a small village throughout her childhood.

The art project could not have happened without Ken’s stalwart perseverance driving through Mud Season, low gas readings on deserted mountain roads, and getting lost without GPS service.  When aggressive mosquitos appeared, a picnic lunch was eaten in the barricade of a hot car.  They survived one shortcut that appeared on the map as a dotted line; it turned out to be an up-hill riverbed with rocks scraping the undercarriage and tree branches raking the roof.  Despite a few memorable trials, the marriage survived and got even stronger as communication skills improved with each adventure.  And, as happens with other members of the Club, their love of this beautiful state was expanded 251 times over!

Sold out.  Publisher of 3 editions went out of business during Covid & cost of printing in color is just too expensive for self-publishing.  Apologies.

Praise for 251 Vermont Vistas

In this love letter to Vermont, watercolorist Nancy Stone commemorates her 251 road trip experience with softly-rendered images – the iconic and the ordinary – that capture the essence of her chosen state. 251 Vermont Vistas is a charming, beautifully crafted book that will inspire. Pretty as a postcard.

Having spent a career of over 44 years in Vermont state and local goverment, from Burlington to Bethel, this is by far the best "global" perspective and feel one can get of the state in a glimpse. Nothing like it has ever been done or can compare to it.
--Bert Moffatt (town manager/ administrator of seven Vermont municipalities and former Director  of the Vermont State Transportation Board)
